A-level resits

OUR RESIT COURSES ARE NOW AVAILABLE ONLINE

Online A-level resit courses

In response to the current situation, Oxford Science and Maths is offering a full range of intensive online A-level courses to enable students to ‘resit’ exams in October or November.

We will also be running longer courses for students who wish to sit exams next summer.

REAL EXAMS, NOT ASSESSMENT BY CENTRE

In previous years, it has always been possible to resit A-level exams if grades turned out to be lower than expected, for example as a result of illness, stress, or other distractions.

This year – as with last year – there is an additional complication: exam grades have been awarded not on the basis of actual results but through assessment by the centre. Essentially, the ‘rules of the game’ were changed in the middle of the course, which will have resulted in many students being awarded grades which they consider unfair.

Resitting offers a way of improving your grades by sitting a real examination instead of relying on centre assessment – allowing you the opportunity to do the course or career of your choice.

RESIT IN OCTOBER/NOVEMBER OR JUNE

Careful thought is required in deciding when to resit. October or November resits are appropriate if the amount of work needed does not justify taking a whole year. This could be if, for example, you basically know the material but the grade doesn’t reflect that. Or if you only need to resit one subject. Or if you only just missed your target grades. A lot depends on individual circumstances and we make no hard and fast rules. If, for example you achieved a grade C in Maths and you want to push it up to an A, then doing that by October/November is realistic. On the other hand, if you got two Es and a U, and you wish to retake all three subjects, and you need significantly higher grades, we would suggest you should probably take a full year. ADVANTAGES OF ONLINE TUITION

Our resit courses this year are all online. Tuition is normally on a one-to-one basis. However we may occasionally teach two or three compatible students together, in which case the number of hours is increased.

Online tuition has a number of clear advantages over face-to-face tuition. Firstly, you can live at home: there is no need to move to Oxford or to arrange accommodation here. Neither time nor money is spent on preparing for the tutorial – for instance putting away what you were doing already – or travelling to and from the tutorial each day. You will never forget a calculator, or a notepad, or a textbook. All that time saved adds up, giving you lots of extra time for revision and other activities. There is no need to worry about having to walk or cycle to a lesson in the wind or the rain or the snow. Times of tutorials can be more flexible if they are at home. There is no risk of catching cold, flu, or other viruses, and it doesn’t feel so daunting to attend tutorials if you aren’t feeling too well. Tuition will, of course, be unaffected by any unexpected new covid restrictions which may be introduced.

WHAT YOU NEED

You will need a modern computer with microphone and speaker (or headphones). A fast and reliable internet connection is essential. You also need a pad of writing paper and a pen. Beyond that, a writing tablet would useful as would a printer.

OUR CREDENTIALS

Oxford Science and Maths Tutors has been a part of the Oxford Tutorial scene for many years. Our ‘get those grades’ catchphrase was first used in 1986. We initially tutored students in their own homes and moved into city-centre premises during the 1990s. More recently we have shifted to online tutoring – so, having come full circle, we are once more tutoring people in their own homes!
